Geographies, The Inkwell ~ 2021

After having a short story published in The Inkwell, I realised how much I enjoyed working with the copy-editor and thought that it was something I could do ~ not only because it sparked something in me, but because it could be something I could do for a potential career and any experience would surely help me along the way. In April of 2021, there was an AGM and I applied for the position of copy-editor, and was subsequently elected and began the role the following academic year!

The society was PublishEd, a small team of students who, per semester, would organise and publish a magazine with a theme. My role, as mentioned, was copy-editor ~ my particular responsibilities included collating the prose and poetry submissions to create a long and shortlist, and then working closely with the writers by editing their submissions so that they were ready for print in the magazine. There was a lot more to the role, such as regular meetings with the other society members to decide on the theme of the semesterly magazine, organising and carrying out society events and magazine launches, and overseeing the society's social media accounts.

The first edition I worked on was Geographies, and we promoted pieces that explored the physical, emotional or spiritual significance of the relationship between bodies and the spaces we inhabit. We ended up receiving a lot more submissions than we initially imagined, so creating the long and shortlists was quite a task. But we did, and all worked together to produce a beautiful edition.

It was an honour to work with such a committed team of students, and a pleasure to work so closely with the contributors. I'm so proud of how this issue turned out.
